Yesterday

1/8/2019

When you go to Hopkins in Baltimore, you should back a lunch. Why? Because you're going to be there a while.  Yesterday, was no different. First appointment was with the eye doctor at 12:30, and because the wait was going to be so long, Jeff and I were able to see our regular doctor. After those appointments, back up to see the eye doctor, and only had a minimal wait time. "Minimal" wait time for this doctor could stretch into hours.

Through all of this waiting around, Bella was, as usual, flawless. Jeff and I couldn't be prouder of her. When Jeff puts the vest on her, she somehow knows that it's time to work.

By the time we got home, it was after 5:00. And, we were both exhausted. I have no earthly idea why just sitting around all day, is so hard on your body. But it is. Frozen dinners, remote control and Bella and Daisy on our laps. A good way to end the day.

Today, is supposed to be warm, but there isn't any sunshine out. Maybe she'll raise her head up, later in the day. Or maybe not. Mother Nature is, after all, fickle.

Starting tomorrow, our temperatures will be heading down, into the 30's. That means, of course, that bedtime will be a required "two dog" night!

After much debate with myself, I took down the gate that blocks the dogs from the living room. They are now 2+ years old, so if I don't take the gate down now, then when?

Jeff has been super faithful to his evening walks with the girls. While I know should get out and walk, I need to stick to looping around the circle with my rollator. Honestly, I'm afraid to go down our hill, but really afraid of having to push my rollator back up said hill. If I don't try the hill, then obviously I'll never know, whether it's doable for me. But, fear is a real thing, and I don't know about you, but it keeps me in the house most of the time. I've fallen too many times and those instances has made me wary.

Today, I'll move important dates from my 2018 calendar to the 2019 calendar. For each person's birthday or anniversary, I forward the age and/or milestone and this way, I can keep track of birthdays, anniversaries, and things like that. Too be fair, I even update my birthday, which this year will be 70! Ugh.

Today, I'll try to accomplish something/anything. Wish me luck.

Doctor's Day

1/7/2019

Yesterday afternoon, Jeff took Bella and I to run our weekly errands - Costco and Walmart. I had a very short shopping list, with more "no we don't need that" than things we needed to buy.

I'll tell you how good we were. Our groceries at WalMart all fit into my little stupid rolling cart. This is huge for our shopping. We did buy Jeff's special crackers, but no additional ones. No cookies, candy or other high sugar snacks. No extra food for the freezer or pantry.

Scott came by yesterday, and when he opened up the pantry, wow was only part of what he said. I sent him home with two packages of cookies. I love those cookies, but I want to keep temptation to a minimum. In our case, less is more. My rationale is/was that we needed to live off the food in the pantry and freezer downstairs. We may not like what we're eating, but sometimes you just have to buy down on a bullet.

Our Sunday night dinners are always pizza. Tempting to buy a huge pizza from Costco, but instead, we cooked one that we had in the freezer.
There are certain food that Jeff will never run out of: his crackers, mayo, buttermilk and toilet paper. A confusing list I grant you, but particularly with regard to mayo, I never run out. To assure myself of this, I tape a note stating last one, to the last jar. Neat idea, I think.

Seeing the eye doctor today, and hope that my right eye has progressed enough, that I can get a prescription for both my sunglasses and reading glasses. I can see pretty well out of both eyes, but small print continues to trip me up. I think it would be lovely to buy glasses, like normal people, and not having to take out a loan to pay for them!

Also, having my sixth month check-up with my regular doctor. I have a number of complaints, my shoulder for one, and this head spinning thing I've got going on.

Bella will come along. She is absolutely flawless in public, and doesn't let anybody or anything bother her. Time permitting, we might swing by and drop off a few things for alterations. Everything I bought for myself at Christmas, are too long in sleeves and lengths. Go figure. If I were also much taller, I wouldn't have this problem at all. Could I cuff the things I want altered, of course I could. Do I want to do that? Nope, just not going to happen. I also need to shorten some pants, because I don't like pants that are close to covering my foot. A true trip and fall situation for me. While not fashionable to wear shorter pants, as well as elastic waist pants which never have been cool. Frankly, I'm more into comfort than fashion. I just want clothes that fit me. I don't think that's too much to ask.

Signing off now, have to get myself ready for a trip to Baltimore.

Later.

Soap Box Time -Apologies!

1/6/2019

If you follow my blog, and I hope you do, then you know I steer away from politics. But today, I just can't. You may not agree with what I say, and that's okay, but please don't send me hate posts. I'm not trying to upset anyone - just stating the facts.

Issue number one: officials are getting $10,000 raises. As the saying goes, the rich get richer, and well, you know the poor get poorer.

Do any of the "powers to be" in Washington ever stop and think about us regular folk? Um, doesn't seem like they do.The "little" people, even though they're temporarily out of work, still have to put food on the table, pay utilities and mortgages. Of course, it's possible that lenders may make some leniency for people who can't make their house payment. But probably not forever. They have to make money too.

Another little thing that is seldom mentioned is that food aid and tax refund could be adversely affected. Again, back to the regular people. When you have a family, food on the table is kind of a big deal. Have to wait on a tax refund, in my mind (only my opinion here) isn't nearly as important as feeding people.

Food stamps, which really helps out the low income families, There are approximately 38 MILLION who survive on low wages, and food stamps. While I never had to use food stamps, there was a period in my past (before Jeff), where my coworkers knew I was in a bind. While money wasn't given to me, I was taken out for free lunches frequently. I would try to insist on paying the bill, even though I had no money. But pride can sometimes get in the way of allowing people to prop you up, if only temporarily.

Before Jeff came along, my son and I would go grocery shopping - I guess you could it that. I would buy stale bread, expired cans of food and anything else I could buy for a low price. Luxuries, such as named brand cereal, for instance, was completely out of the question.

One of the first things that Jeff did for me, while we were dating, was to take Kenny and I grocery shopping. We had two carts. Mine contained the stale and outdated cans and food. Jeff's cart was filled up with just about everything a "poor" (at least that's what I thought of myself) person might want/need. When we got to the register, I told Jeff that there was no way I could afford all the groceries he had bought. Turns out, it wasn't a problem, he paid for both baskets! Be still my heart. Where has this guy been all my life! Maybe the stars just aligned in the right pattern, to make our lives connect. This is a good man, who said his vows, for better or worse. Unfortunately, I feel bad that I think we're in the worse part of our lives. To that end, I really do try to be an active participant. Trouble with that is, I normally just crash and burn.

When somebody gives you a hand-up, be gracious and accept the help. There will be a time when you will or might be in a position to help somebody.

This many years later, I remember the kindness of coworkers, who took up a collection, so that I could go to a doctor (too many bounced checks in the past). These were just people I worked with. Some were friends of mine, others were just coworker, but all of them knew I was in a tight spot. I will never forget the kindness they had shown me.

Paying it forward for me, is treating Stacey and perhaps now Wendy for a "ladies day out" toes and nails. It's good quality time for all of us. I pay for meals at McDonalds. and any other small thing I can do for the "girls". While it might be hell on the budget, but the high I receive for giving back, even just a little bit, makes me feel really good about myself.

To all of the people, who are directed affected by all this nonsense, I can only offer you that hopefully in the near future, things will work themselves out, and you will be given the support from the government that you so badly need.

Off my soap box now. I'm not trying to be political, I'm just an angry old person, who doesn't understand what's happening now.

On a more positive note, it's a beautiful day for a ride with the top down, which is exactly what Jeff and I are going to do this afternoon.

Happy Sunday.

Well Here We Are Again

1/4/2018

We have survived the first week of the new year. Hopefully, none of you has had any kind of calamity so far. Jeff and I, so far been free of drama, and since the holidays are over, we are also stress free! We don't know how long that will last, but we'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Today, is drop off packages at UPS and the Post Office. Whew. I think that's everything that needs to be returned. Or, I hope so, since I have very few empty boxes left, and will probably recycle those next week.

Yeah, channel 9 has returned.  Hurrah. Some of the best shows we watch are on that channel. I don't know the how and why of the agreement, and don't care. Just give me my television back.

I see the eye doctor next week for I think a final check-up. I hope I will get a prescription for new glasses, probably just bifocals. I can see well enough for distance, a bit fuzzy, but something I can likely live with. What I can't handle, is that small print is my enemy. I have to have a magnifying class to read tiny print. Or, worst case, have Jeff read to me. But, you do what you gotta do to survive.

No weekend plans, and I'm okay with that. It's possible that Jeff will go out to one of the "farms"  to lend a hand. For me, I'd rather stay home. Can you say reclusive anybody? Yes, I am. Not overly proud of using that name to describe me, but it is what it is.

Getting out and about presents a challenge to me. I can't stand and/or walk for long periods of time. I am trying to make loops (2 loops yesterday) around the circle in front of the house. Not exactly record-breaking, but everybody has to start somewhere.

Most of the government is shut down. I feel sorry for the people who, at the moment, are laid off, for lack of a better word. Some of these people live paycheck to paycheck. There are bills to pay, groceries to buy, and the list goes on and on. You have to wonder whether the government really understands the hardship of the "little" people. Okay, I'm off my soap box now, I promise. Just needed to get that said.

I'm under a bit of atime constraint this morning, because Jeff says we are going out to run errands around lunch time. So I'd better be ready. I haven't left the house since Christmas, so this would be a good time for me to "walk" about.

This was a short week for everybody, and we'll have to wait a bit for the next holiday.

Enjoy your weekend everybody.

Troubles With Returns

1/3/2019

We've all been there. Where exactly? Oh, amid the flurry of opening up Christmas presents, there is always something that doesn't fit, or worse, doesn't suit the recipient.

Through my "buying season", I am careful to keep all packing slips - just in case. In past years, I've been a little off my game, when it comes to buying clothes. This year, I really thought that I had hit it out of the ballpark.

And, then Jeff started opening up his presents, too big, too big, etc. You get the idea. Oh, and in keeping with my Girl Scout motto "always be prepared", I kept all the boxes, just in case. Yesterday, was the first time that Ada was able to go into the living room and vacuum and dust.

Since I was confident that I had everything that needed returning, in a box, sealed and ready for shipping. And, here's the problem for me today. I am supposed to return a gift for Andrew. The returning is not a problem, as we have several boxes ready to go to the post office, or UPS. The real problem is, that yesterday, in a vote of confidence (my confidence), we recycled most of our empty boxes. Now, I will have to search and find (hopefully) just one more box. The return is free, if I have a spare box sitting around. Fingers crossed!

This morning, after I get the essentials done, I'll look around, and hopefully find, an empty box that didn't go in the recycling bin this morning. Wish me luck!

Today's temperature at the moment, is not too hot, and not too cold. Later this morning, I will take several loops around the circle. I could go downhill, but my fears are that I might not be able to push the rollator back up the hill, and/or fall, which is not an option for me.

Hi, Ho, If's Off To Work We Go!

1/2/2019

What should I talk about today? Hmm. Most days, when sit down with my coffee, I have an open mind (or what's left of it) that's just rolling around in writing limbo, if you will.

Oh, I know. Not big news to everyone, but Jeff and I, and particularly me, have at the moment lost of our tv channels. Horrors I know. It just happens to be a channel, but it's a channel that has some of our favorite shows.

Apparently, Verizon (our company), has gotten themselves into a p***ing contest with a company called Tegna, whoever theyare. It appears as many as I MILLION subscribers are affected. And, of course that includes us too. So, while the bigwigs continue, or not, to set up a suitable agreement, the "real" people - you and me, bear the brunt of this standoff. Even though we know that the CBS channel isn't working, it doesn't keep us from checking and rechecking to see if the channel is back. So far, it's not. True, we can watch other channels, and we are, but feel like we are hostages in a "war" between two companies. I'm sure the executives of both companies, are continuing to receive their mega salaries. But, as Rhett once said to Scarlett, "Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn". And, that's what I would like to say to the people at the top of the television food chain, who apparently don't want to play ball with one another.

While I don't follow sports, apparently the NFL final game of 2018, Super Bowl LIII, is supposed to be shown on CBS. This kind of news will make football fanatics, go crazy.

Lucky for me, I was given several books for Christmas. Mind you, in order to read those books, I need a magnifying glass and some reading specs. But, as a true book lover, I can tell you that I can absolutely get it done.

Happy New Year Everone

1/1/2019

There I did it, my first "2019" written/typed this year. Let's hope I can keep the trend up!

Our neighbors were having a party last night, and we didn't want to go to bed, until everyone had left. Reason? Car doors slamming, people talking, stuff like that, would set the girls off on a barking campaign.

Not that you're keeping count, but tomorrow I will have the last of my returns sent off. Since I've managed to get the returns ready, I can now dispose of the empty boxes finally. I don't want to prematurely get rid of a box, and then need one!

If one of your New Year's resolution is to get in more exercise, today would be a good time to get into the gym. Also, toss out all sugar temptations (this may not pertain to everyone, but it sure does for me.

A new year has endless possibilities. All we have to do, and it sounds simple enough, is to grab onto those possibilities and run with them. I, vow to take out my rollator for a few loops around the circle every day. Okay, most days.

I want to worry less, and have less stress. This resolution may be hard, if not impossible for me. I worry when I don't have anything to worry about. I know this makes Jeff crazy (not like my kind of crazy), and there are no apologies that I can give him, to make things better for him.

I should also stay current with paper filing. And, there is a lot it. At one time, I used to sort paid bills by category: utilities, medical and stuff like that. I no longer feel compelled to do that now. I have a box and I just cram all the paid bills into the box. Now, if we need to pull out a paid bill (fingers crossed that we never will have to do that), retrieving said bill could be a nightmare.

With some limitations, I will try and move around more. Even doing the laundry and dishes count as "moving around".  Okay, just a little bit of exercise, if you will, but it counts toward exercising.

I hope all of you rang in the new year, with streamers, some kind of noise maker and good food with good friends.

Talk to you soon.
