After all of Mother Nature's nonsense yesterday, with flash floods, cars being swept away, and trees falling down, today she wants to play nice. It is absolutely beautiful outside. I have a doctor's appointment, so it will definitely be a top down drive! Bella likes these rides the best. And, frankly so do I.
Hair update. On the cusp of turning 70 this year, I've decided to futz with my hair. I have dark brown hair with some gray mixed in slightly. If memory serves me correct, my Mother had to color her hair gray. And, right now there is a lot of very young people who are sporting white and/or gray hair. Yesterday, I used a gray rinse on my hair (it washes out with shampoo). I was disappointed because the gray didn't really stand out too much with my dark hair. But, I worked at it, and eventually was sporting "some" gray hair, but not enough to really (emphasis on the word some) make my hair gray. I, was in a word, disappointed. But, I continued to rub in the gray rinse, and then on top of that, added my lavender "mascara" if you will into my hair. When I was done fooling around, I brushed my hair to one side, and then I could really see the gray mingled with the lavender. I thought, and still do, that my hair looked great. Everything I've used so far, goes away with one shampoo, so no major commitment on my part. I could have my hair colored permanently, but that's a big step - what if I don't really look good with gray hair - then I'm stuck with it. I'm just not that gutsy.
Last night, the girls and I were fighting for space in the bed. Sadly, I lost the battle and fell out of bed. In falling, I must have (but don't remember), hitting my mouth on the nightstand. Today, while showering, I kept grinding on something hard. After the shower, I looked in the mirror, and a piece of one of my front teeth has chipped away. Curses. I don't have the best teeth anyway, and to damage a front tooth, is a blow to my vanity! Yes, I still want to look my best, but if I hole in the front of the mouth, that will so not be a good look for me!
Some of you may have heard about, or read about Marie Kondo. She has a method of putting your clothes away. Yesterday, with a burst of energy, I took all the day clothes I wear, put them in the spare room, and got to work.
First, I tossed in a corner any piece of clothing that was just way too big. By the way, that's a really good feeling. Then rolling up my pants and blouses, using the Kondo method, and putting them in a drawer, fold side down. Today, when I went to get some clothes for today, I looked in the pants drawer, and easily found pants that I wanted to wear today. I did the same for finding a shirt. It was so easy, that it was actually a bit scary. I never thought that this way of rolling clothes, allowing me to see what my choices are was feasible. I'm hear to tell you, that with a bit of effort, it is doable and makes picking out clothes really easy. Wish I had done this before. Marie, also folds up nicely underwear and pajamas, etc. Um, not sure that I want to go to that extreme, but who knows what I will do in the future. Try it. I think you'll like it.
Closing now. Appointment coming up at noon, and I don't want to be late.
Talk to you later.

A Bit Of This And A Bit Of That
7/8/2019
Just on the title alone, you know that I don't have anything particular to blog about, merely odds and ends.
From time to time, I check out the available dogs at the humane shelters. Not too surprising, almost all of the dogs available for adoption, are pit bulls, staffordshire terriers, or a combination of both. I know that with the right owner and training, these kinds of dogs can make great pets. Um, even knowing this, I will never own one. I would never feel safe around this kind of dog. It's a pity really, that these kind of dogs have such a bad reputation. And, because they do, most, if not all, of them will never be rescued. Let's here it for spaying or neutering dogs. There are too many dogs that need to be rescued, and some of them will never know what a good life they could have in somebody's house.
Statistically, pit bulls have a record (not a particularly good one), of having bitten 284 people over a 13 year period. On average, there are 18 fatal dog bites. Kind of makes you wonder, what kind of training, or not, dogs have had. Jeff and I have never wanted or felt the need to own a dog breed that is considered dangerous. Of course, we all know that even the gentlest dog can be provoked and/or teased enough for them to defend themselves.
Bella produces a very loud bark, but that's all she's got. Daisy, on the other hand, seems to only bark when she's outside! A behavior not well received by the neighbors or us.
Yesterday, in a burst of energy, that I didn't know I had, I went about taking clothes from our bedroom, and sorted through each piece. Those clothes that fit right now, or clothes that will fit with just a few less pounds, were given high priority to get into a dresser. I tried to use the folding method that I learned from watching Marie Kondo shows. She blesses all her clothes, particularly those that are going to be leaving the house. Um, pretty sure that I don't feel I have to bless clothing. I "rescued" them from a store - they should be thanking me!
I started my high protein diet in November last year. After all these months, it's become more of a way to eat (less is more), than a diet. But, having said that, I do appreciate that by starting this diet, it has given me a kick start to losing pounds. I am following the old "tried and true". Eat when you're hungry, and stop when you're not! That sounds easy, but for most of us, don't follow that rule. I know I didn't!
My personal training is going quite well. I like having somebody in my corner, cheering me on, whether I'm struggling or having more success. Jeff paid for 10 sessions, and I want to have 10 more. Not really an excuse, but when most of your lower body hurts, it's hard to work up enthusiasm for exercising.
When I go upstairs (blogging takes precedence), I will go back into that bedroom, and continue what I started yesterday. Baby steps.
It has poured here, our backyard is flooded. And, I guess there is more rain on the way. Glad we live at the top of the hill. Does your bedroom look like this? Mind does, but I'm working on it. Rome wasn't built in a day, so it stands to reason that organizing your clothes, will take more than a day or perhaps even two!

Signing off.

Oops - Missed a Day or Two!
7/7/2019
Sorry about missing a day or two - apologies. Does uninspired count? Perhaps, on "blank brain" days, I should just probably post something like: brain fog.
Our granddaughter, Elly, this week is staying at an overnight camp. Because simply everybody wants mail, I have three pieces of mail to send. One is a letter, the other two are comics from the paper, that Elly might find fun. Garfield, for example.
Yesterday, was a sluggish day for Jeff, the girls and myself. The problem with the girls is that everybody is quiet, and lightly snoozing. And, then one of the girls hears something (could be a town away for all we know), and they run
pell-mell down the stairs, and out the doggy door.
If our neighbors are on their deck, this gets the girls' attention, and barking ensues. Some of the time, we actually have to bring them back in the house, and shut the basement door. None of our neighbors want (duh) a dog that won't stop barking.
Jeff will make his weekly pilgrimage to his favorite stores: Costco and WalMart. He and Bella will go, and Daisy and I will stay at home. It's a win-win situation for all of us.
Busy week coming up. Appointments of one kind or another, every day this week. Of course, these appointments naturally do not occur late in the afternoon. Jeff is still working, and I try to schedule appointments as late in the day as I can. See how thoughtful I am?
For me? I've got several boxes and plastic containers in the den. I need to purge and merge. I don't want all these storage containers in the den anylonger. Trouble is, when you start "trying" to put things away, there is always the problem of where to put all of this stuff. The stuff in question are not what I would toss out. There's a reason why I have kep these things, but frankly, I don't actually remember why. Perhaps, later in the day, my "organizing" plan will come to mind. Or not.
We've had so much rain here, that the grass and weeds as well (bummer about the weeds) are growing and the grass is a beautiful shade of green. It's amazing what a little water can do for plants and grass. Actually, we haven't had just a "little" bit of water - we've had a lot of water. Likely, too much water for the farmers, who on a regular basis, have too little water, or some other act of Mother Nature that gets in their way.
My grandparents were farmers, and while I was just a child, I can remember conversations my parents had with them about crops.
I'm off to the den to start analyzing the contents of those boxes. Wish me luck.
Happy Sunday.

4th of July In Review
7/5/2019
Yesterday, there was parades, army vehicles (really), the concert, fireworks and the speech by the President. While, I recorded the show "Capital Fourth" several times, thank you Tivo. Somehow, I got confused (a real state of mind for me), and missed the show that included the President's speech. Since I didn't hear the speech, and you all know that I don't "do" politics, so I'll just leave it at that.
Scott and Wendy invited us to their house yesterday for dinner. They served us really good tasting ribs, corn salad, Jeff's potato salad (I cooked the potatoes!) and Jeff's coleslaw. I will tell you now that all the food yesterday was very, very good. Wendy made (emphasis on made) apple pies and we were also treated with homemade ice cream. Yummy.
We took the girls, and both of them were very good. Daisy, is an anxiety pee-er (I knot that's not really a word, but you get the idea), so Jeff took her out in the front yard before we went inside. Daisy, as a rule, cannot relax at other people's homes. But, when I was sitting in the recliner, she assumed the "position". Position? Yes, when I'm in my recliner, she jumps up and stays on my lap generally for a long time. She particularly likes my lap after I've eaten, because she's looking for a crumb or two on my shirt! And, most of the time, she does find something to eat! Guess, I'm a food spill-er.
The ride home things were pretty quiet in the backseat. Daisy always curls up in a corner, but even Bella stretched out, for a quick snooze. On our way home, I was able to watch fireworks being set off in the distance. Jeff, had to drive, so he missed the fireworks.
Once home, we watched a little bit of television (4th of July celebration), but it wasn't very long that Jeff and I called "day over". I must have been tired, because I didn't get up until 10:00! The girls will not sleep that long, so Jeff gets up with them somewhere between 7:30 and 8:00.
Nothing on the calendar for today and this weekend. But, next week, we have appointments every day of the week. Bella gets to go along, and she really likes the ride if the top is down! Actually, we all like riding with the top down.
I hope all of you had a wonderful 4th of July. Of course, it's business as usual. Jeff has already started his workday and his day is generally not over until early evening.

Fourth of July
7/3/2019
Tomorrow, will be all about patriotism, fireworks and concerts. Jeff and I have never gone into DC to watch the concerts and/or fireworks. Would it be kind of neat to actually see everything live. Of course, we would have to fight the Metro going and coming. And, if you bring lawn chairs - guess what, you get to bring those too. The ride on the Metro going into DC might not be too bad, but the ride home, would be, I assume, would be horrible. When the event is over, lots of people, statistically speaking, could up upwards of 400,000 people all trying to get on the Metro at one time! And, that number was from seven years ago. I don't know about you, but I don't want to join the huddled masses trying to get home.
The other solution, and a much better one by far, in my opinion, is to stay home. Prop yourself up in the recliner, eat popcorn perhaps, and sit back and watch the show. There will be nobody sitting in front of me, blocking my view, or sitting on the ground (unless you're willing to drag a lawn chair with you). And, I wouldn't even consider doing that.
Unlike our dog, Old Sam, who went absolutely nuts when he heard fireworks, Bella and Daisy are more chill. They don't care about loud noises, unless the doorbell rings. Then all manner of noise starts up, barking non-stop, until the threat has been identified. Ada has been coming weekly to clean the house for quite some time. Even though Bella knows Ada, she believes she needs to guard the house, at all cost. Luckily, the only thing she does is bark at Ada. After barking, she retreats back into Jeff's office.
When the boys were little, and we lived in California (not that made much of a difference), we always bought a few firecrackers. We lived on a dead end street, and for safety, always had the hose nearby. One of the things we bought, and the boys enjoyed, and I don't know if they even make them anymore, was what I will call a "snake". It was a little black thing (whatever it was really called). One lit, the little snake would unfurl and wiggle around. The boys always enjoyed this, and it was relatively safe. I don't know if they even make them anymore. Actually, I think sparklers are more dangerous. Checking the statistics, in 2017, 12,900 were injured and 8 people died from using sparklers. But, sparklers bring in a lot of money. Can't seem to find that number, during my searching. Sparklers are pretty inexpensive, relative to other fireworks. You can buy sparklers for as little as $1.96. When I was young, we always had sparklers on the 4th of July. At that time, there were no warning labels on fireworks, at least none that I can remember. And, I loved swirling around the sparklers, creating all kinds of designs. But, that was a different time.
Here's a picture of a snake that has been lit and has started to unfurl:

Be safe tomorrow. I won't blog tomorrow, but I'll be back on Friday.

Alll Things British
7/2/2019
Good morning everybody. Jeff and I have appointments today, so I got up early, so that I could chat with all of you! See what a good person I am! (Never hurts to toot your own horn).
Through Amazon, is there any other retailer out there, I bought a used souvenir book about Buckingham Palace. I actually like used books. I like the smell of really old books, and I own several of these.
But, here's what I always wonder. Who originally owned the book? And, why did they give a book away? Wouldn't it be nice if the owner of a book, wrote inside, a bit about themselves. I don't need anybody's name, but would like to know the book's journey. And, perhaps I'm the only person on the planet who gives two hoots about things like that.
I started reading the book, which is filled with magnificent pictures of some of the rooms in the palace. When I'm not looking at the pictures, I read the text, which is filled with stories about royal members of the family, long gone.
When I opened the book, a ticket fell out. The ticket is dated August 20, 2006 for a 12:00 appointment. The ticket cost 12 pounds and fifty cents. Converting that to dollars, the ticket would have cost about $15.00. The ticket is unused, and I can't help but wonder why. The ticket indicates that the person who bought the ticket was over 60. I'm pretty sure that refunds of a ticket purchase was not permitted.
I have an over active imagination. I'm sure that if I bought a ticket for the summer opening of the state rooms, in the palace, almost nothing would keep me from going.
I intend to keep the book. It is what some would call, a coffee table book. Coffee table books are generally what I will call picture books. The ticket? I'm putting it in with my other treasures, in the hope chest. Once I'm gone, I know that nobody will give a second thought to keeping this silly old ticket, and that's okay.
Several appointments today, so I'll keep this blog short.
Have a great day.

I'm Back
7/1/2019
Some of you, or hopefully all of you, noticed my two day absence from blogging. I was on a hiatus of some sort. I guess I could say that I had nothing to say! If you know me well, then you are probably scratching your head about this, because everybody knows that I love to talk!
Happy news. Benjamin has been accepted at a private school for the fall and entering 6th grade. He's not a little boy anymore. Jeff and I couldn't be prouder of his success. We both know he'll do great.
Today, is round two of my personal training. The trainer wants to start slow, because truthfully I haven't been doing regular exercise. I have many excuses for not doing this, mainly due to my hip. I suppose it needs to be replaced, but at this point I have to lose "x" pounds in order to have this done. I'm not sure what the "x" number is, but less than what I weigh now - even with steady dieting!
Saturday, Jeff and I just had a leisurely day at home, not doing too much of anything. In the late afternoon, we went out to Andrew's house, with the girls, for a bar-b-cue meal. Scott, Wendy and Elly were also there, as was "Computer Ken", a family friend.
I brought along the hair chalk, which didn't seem to be working on anybody's hair. Benjamin finally figured out that if you took the chalk out of the comb, the results were much better. After we left, Benjamin chalked his hair all sorts of colors. The nice thing about the chalk is, that it washes off when you wash your hair.
I didn't do much of anything, but sit around and looked "pretty". Stacey and Wendy handled everything - burgers, french fries, corn casserole and dessert. Stacey made two different kinds of brownies - one with caramel inside. I opted for that brownie and it was yummy.
Wendy and Scott made homemade ice cream, and it was so goooooood, and was the perfect accompaniment to the brownies. And, being the dessert person that I am, ate just a "tad" more dessert than I should have eaten.
The guys settled upstairs to talk computer stuff, or whatever. We girls and the children, went to the basement to watch a movie. Benjamin and Elly wanted to watch Ferdinand, a lovely movie about a bull that only wanted to smell the flowers. There were many scenes that kept all of us laughing.
The girls were on their best behavior. Trouble is, Daisy just can't relax. Most of the time she sat and looked like she was made of stone.Once we had her in the car, and then home, she was very, very happy.
Sunday, Jeff did his weekly shopping. I opted to stay home with Daisy. Jeff knows how much I hate riding around in those silly carts. I think the carts should have a horn of sorts, so you can let people know you're coming out of an aisle, or going around a corner. I'm not sure that people would pay attention when hearing a brief horn, but it might make a difference.
I have personal training this afternoon. I've been doing the exercises that I was assigned. Of course, in just a week, I wasn't anticipating a change in the way my body looked. But, I'm going to stick with it. What do I have to lose or gain? I'm going to gain core strength and hopefully get some help with things that matter. Getting off the floor, without looking like a beached whale flopping around! I know you get the picture.
Have a great day, and I really hope that whoever you work for, might give you Friday, the 5th off. Fingers crossed.
