Today, is Jeff's 69th birthday. His age boggles my mind. We were so young when we married 44 (in September) years ago. When we started our life together, neither of us were looking or thinking about getting older. It's okay for the boys to get older, although Scott turning 40 this year, is a wake-up call for me. If he's 40, then Jeff and I are definitely on the "getting old(er)" train.
Jeff was a blind date that was set up by my Dad and his sister. We met on May 5th and married on September 21st. My grandmother's advice, before we got married, was that long engagements don't necessarily mean long marriages. I took her advice to heart, and I'm glad I did.
Jeff has stood by me, through both good and bad times. We've weathered stormy weather, for instance 2013 comes to mind. Our boys have grown up to be outstanding men, and this makes us proud. We did a good job apparently (insert happy face here)!!!
Jeff, who learned from his grandfather, can fix almost anything around the house. Plumbing, electricity, room building, are just some of the things that Jeff can do. He has now reached an age, where he stays off ladders as much as possible. Even now, he loves going out to Andrew's "estate", and mowing the lawn, working on plumbing and anything else that needs "doing". Jeff learned all of skills from his grandfather, and he has passed on that knowledge to the boys.
We have had many good experiences: trip to Hawaii, flying to the Bahamas twice, taking the boys to Carlsbad Caverns, Yosemite, touring Ben and Jerry's factory, as well as a tour of a beer factory, just to name a few of our trips, as well as summer vacations at the Outer Banks. Jeff always goes to the annual Cirrus (brand of plane we have) events. Like a war veteran, at these flying events, the men (mostly), can talk "plane" for hours on end. The plane number we chose was and is N874T. The N stands for North America. The 874 is the date of our marriage, minus one month. We could have chosen N974T, but that would mean Jeff would have to call out our tail number, as "Niner", which is why we opted for the "8". We've had other trips, and as a toddler, Benjamin was strapped in his car seat, when we flew over to the ocean for a day trip.
Jeff is my rock, my everything. He gives but seldom wants to receive. The majority of his working years was with IBM, and he was proud to say that IBM was his employer. Over the years, Jeff has worked hard to provide the boys and I with a good life. He's never let me down, and when we celebrated our anniversary last year, he told me that he was signing up for 40+ years, which will make us older than dirt! Just saying.
Since 2013, when I lost most of my short term memory, and it haunts me still, Jeff has had to tell me things over and over. I know that is trying his patience, and for that I apologize. We have grown together and experienced and shared memories.I know that as we continue our journey together, we will both in the boat rowing together to the shore. We have always told ourselves that we have to have both oars in the boat, and rowing to the same destination. I'm in the boat, even though I can't swim!
So, happy birthday Jeff. I would tell him to eat cake, but he doesn't "do" many sugary things, that's my department! For the next 8 months, I will be married to an older man!
Love you Jeff.

And The Gates Come Tumbling Down!
4/6/2018
For the past two years, we have put gates up all over the house, or shut doors. Yesterday, I took down the gate keeping the girls from going into the living room. I then took that gate and put it so the girls couldn't get into the dining room, only because I have a number of things that need to be put away.
The kitchen gates are down, but because I don't trust Bella 100%, I have put away all the items that she could haul away into the backyard. Our theory is that if the gates remain up all the time, then we'll never know how much we can trust Bella. Daisy is not the issue. She's not tall enough to grab anything off the counters.
The girl's birthdays are coming up soon, and they'll be two years old. My feeling is that we can't live in a "gated community" for the next 15 or so years. Just not happening. We would like to go out for a period of time and leave the girls unguarded in the house. What we should do, is leave the house for let's say 20 minutes, and see how Bella does. If we never try, then we'll never know! We hate having to put the dogs in the basement every time we leave the house.
On a completely different topic, is that Jeff's 69th birthday is tomorrow. When we met, we were 25 years old, and at that time, and still today, wonder how our age keeps creeping forward. And, perhaps, it's not actually creeping, it might be running! I think Jeff and I are okay with our birthdays this year, but next year, might be a different story. Turning 70 next year, might be a tough pill to swallow. I know people live longer today when compared to the life expectancy of generations before us. The boys are busy with their lives, so Jeff's birthday probably won't hit their radars. And in September, we'll be celebrating our 44th wedding anniversary. A long marriage from a blind date!
So there you have it. Daisy's second birthday is on the 15th - tax day. Some folks over the last two years, keep asking if the girls bring us more joy, then the damage they have done. The answer is yes, absolutely!
Happy Friday everyone.

Still Winter?
4/5/2018
We're coming to a close on the first week of April, and it's chilly outside. Flowers are coming up and trees are beginning to bud. Why? Because it's spring. Or, maybe it's because it's spring somewhere!
The girls don't like the orange construction fence in the backyard. Jeff does take them for a walk every day, and if I was more stable on my feet, I could walk them also. But, based on my track record for falling, I'll leave the exercising to Jeff.
I think I told you that Toys R Us was selling discounted toys online. I have to buy for both Benjamin and Elly this year, so I took advantage of the sale. Initially, after I placed my order, I received emails telling me that my order was delayed, and they wouldn't charge my credit card until the order had shipped. Truthfully, I had my doubts about ever receiving these toys. Yesterday, I got an email that my order had shipped! And, it appears that I can even return items if need be. So, I'm anxiously awaiting my packages. For safety sake, I'll probably but the toys in the spare bathroom, because nobody but Jeff and I go in there! I know that's an odd storage place, but Benjamin goes into the two spare bedrooms, so the bathroom it is. Don't bother to suggest that "I could" wrap everything up, but I put wrapping presents pretty high on my least favorite thing to do.
On a trial basis, I am leaving more gates down, to see how Bella does with more freedom. Now, if I close the basement door, then anything she steals can't go into the bowels of the basement and/or the backyard! I'll let you know how that goes. Bella isn't ready, or perhaps we're not ready, to leave her in the house alone. She could, if she desired, do major damage, and unless you catch a dog in the act of being bad, you can't really correct them.
Benjamin had a small bookcase in his bedroom, and Stacey was going to sell it. I asked her if I could have the bookcase, and she agreed. I will make up the price, by giving her something of mine to sell. It's a win-win for both of us.
The clock is ticking away, so I'm closing, so that I can get dressed and face the day.

The "Thing" That Lives Under The Porch"!
4/4/2018
We all made it to Wednesday, and it's all downhill from here. We're having some light rain, but that's good news for the grass seed that has been put down in the backyard. The grass in the front yard is greening up nicely. And, I love the new boxwoods in front of the porch.
While the landscaper crew was here on Monday, they wanted to put dirt in under the porch. The original dirt had "settled" over the past 32 years - shocking I know. They put the dirt in under one side of the porch, and when they moved over to the other side, they simply didn't know what to do. Why? Because our "beasty" (ground hog) was under the porch. The crew leader came over to look under the porch, and could actually see the "little" (understatement, he's fairly big) guy looking at him. Various attempts were tried to get the animal to move, but to no avail. Finally, they just put the dirt in under the porch anyway. In case any of you are wondering about the animal, we saw prints going through the mulch yesterday. I'd be okay if he didn't come back. There are many porches in the neighborhood where he could live. At least for now, he appears to be a bachelor (I'm assuming he's a he), and hasn't brought along any furry companions. If he gets permanent company, then it will be time to deal with the population explosion. But, for now, he's just hanging around.

Shopping (Yipee)
4/3/2018
Yesterday, Stacey and Benjamin came to visit. I always enjoy their company. We left Benjamin home with Jeff, and PopPop came through with his famous and yummy scrambled eggs. While Jeff was working in his office, Benjamin was free to sing, dance, jump and you name it, while "watching" television.
I had two packages to mail, so the first stop was the Post Office. Second stop was McDonald's. We needed to keep our strength up for shopping. Shopping is easier on a full tummy!
We went to Party City, and because it was the middle of the day, the store was relatively empty. When our boys had birthday parties, light years ago, I don't remember there being a store devoted solely to party stuff. Basically, it's what color you want and then you have to decide how many utensils, treat bags, etc., you need to buy. Really over whelming.
I used my rollator in Kohl's, which allowed me to walk a little and sit a little. A win-win for me. It has been a really long time since I was in a store, and no WalMart is not a "store" "store", in my humble opinion. Stacey was looking for dress shoes as well as dress shirts and ties. Benjamin's half-sister is getting married this weekend, and he needs to wear clothes, that will look very nice on him, but maybe won't be very comfortable.
Before we went searching for clothes and shoes for Benjamin, we went to the ladies section (duh, that's a no brainer), to see what clothes were on sale. Unfortunately, there was absolutely no shortage of things to buy. Stacey found some clothes for herself. And, I, went through the sales racks and actually found several things to try on. These were tops only. And, wouldn't you know it, everything I took to the dressing room, FIT, and looked good on me, which is absolutely a bonus!
Next stop, was the boys' department, and Stacey found the clothes she needed for this weekend. I also found some Ralph Lauren t-shirts on sale, and she bought those as well.
Our intention after shopping at Koh's, was to go to Target to return something I bought. And, then I was hoping we could go to Barnes and Noble, because I absolutely love being surrounded by all the reading possibilities! But, even with sitting occasionally on my rollator, after we left Kohl's, I had simply run out of steam. Came home, took a pain pill, grabbed an ice pack and went to my chair, not necessarily in that order. While I love to shop, particularly if I find clothes that fit, but the shopping, even though I could sit on my rollator, wore me out.
Oh, an added bonus was that the landscaper was able to come yesterday. They planted new boxwoods in the front yard in front of the porch. Cut down trees, trimmed others, and put down grass seed, fertilizer and then covered all that up with straw. We think they were a little stingy on the straw, but straw is readily available. They put up an orange plastic fence, blocking the dogs from being on the seeded area. The area were the dogs can be outside, is now much smaller and walks are really needed, which would be good for the dogs as well as Jeff.
All in all, yesterday was a very good day. Stacey is very good to me and doesn't mind getting the rollator in and out of the car, which makes shopping much easier for me.

Our Luck
4/2/2018
Jeff and I have long lamented that we don't ever see to win a Lottery. Doesn't have to be mega millions, but that would be nice. Nope, we can't even get enough numbers right to be able to pay for the stupid ticket. I know, if you don't play, you can't win. I get that. But still, it would be ever so nice to win a wee bit, a hundred dollars would add some extra "coins" to the piggy bank!
Today, after having to cancel two times before, the landscaping people are supposed to be here at the house and start the transformation in the backyard. Last time they were supposed to come, the forecast called for some snow. The snow did come, but it were merely a dusting.
Looking out my window this morning, there is a very gray sky and it has apparently rained sometime during the night. Will they call to reschedule? I've got my fingers crossed that they'll come and, if nothing else, could pull up all the boxwood plants in front of the porch.
My physical therapist is coming this morning at 9:00. Ugh. She's not going to be too happy when I tell her that I fell over the weekend. Tripped on a dog bone and lost my balance. The contents of my glass, thankfully just water, went everywhere. Last time she was here, we took my rollator out and walked around the circle a couple of times. Still can't make it around the circle without stopping to rest. Clearly, not in the best of shape. (Ya think?)
Stacey and Benjamin said that they are coming today, which is perfect, because I need Benjamin to try on the new clothes I've bought him. If, they don't fit him, then a trip to Target will be in order to buy bigger or smaller clothes. And there is some kind of pull once you're in the store, causing me to buy things. Even things I might not need exactly, but it was cute, on sale, or whatever reason, so I buy it/them. The only other store that could start me on a buying frenzy would be a book store. I love to be surrounded by books, it's definitely a happy place for me, but a dangerous place as well!
Jeff went shopping yesterday armed with a new kind of grocery list. One one side of the paper, were all the "no" things, meaning we didn't need those particular foods. The other side was a small, for us, list of things we either wanted or needed. Cookies? They fall into a special category, I want and need them both at the same time, but I also know they aren't good for me. It's no secret that I love sugar, but definitely feel that I should have something sweet after dinner. Jeff, not affected by the sugar bug, is okay with not eating anything much after dinner. We're the original Jack Spratt family!
The clock is ticking toward 9:00, so I'm going to close now, so that I can get my clothes on before the therapist arrives.

Happy Easter
4/1/2018
Happy Easter everyone. There are no children, of any size/age, living with Jeff and I now, so Easter isn't a big deal anymore. When the boys were home, long after they no longer believed in the bunny, hard boiled eggs were scattered around the house. The older they got, the harder Jeff and I looked for an out-of-the-way hiding spot. One year, an egg was perched on a ceiling fan blade. They needed hints for that one. Piece of advice - ALWAYS know how many eggs you hide. But, if you lose count, don't worry, within a day or two your nose will lead you to the smell!
Growing up, we went to church. The only time we went to church. I can still remember the pretty and frilly dresses that Marilee and I wore. And, as children, even as teenagers, we knew that you never bit the ears off first. Why? I've no earthly idea, but when the boys were young, I passed on that tidbit to them.
We moved here in 1986, and there was an egg hunt for children. We took Scott and Andy to the hunt, but Scott had difficulty finding very many eggs. Andy stepped in, and started pointing out eggs to Scott. There are times when brothers take care of brothers, and it's wonderful to see.
We used to buy those plastic baskets as well as the green "grass" to go inside. I hate and still do, that fakey (not a word, but you get the idea) grass. It seems to go everywhere, and truthfully, children probably don't want a grass-lined basket - just chocolate please!
These days, there are far more choices for the bunny to buy. Filled bunnies, those Cadbury eggs (yummy), Easter colored Hershey kisses, and the list just goes on and on. Last year, I bought Benjamin and his friend Natalie, Easter baskets and an appropriate amount of goodies. I didn't do that this year. Now, I could go to any store today, and buy deeply discounted Easter candy! Just saying.
Jeff's 69th birthday is on Saturday. I know Scott won't be in town, and I'm not sure about Andy et al. Since the 7th is a non-holiday day, Jeff and I could likely go to a steak house in the afternoon and be able to walk right in. I hate that waiting for a table. For many people, that waiting is done at the bar, which the restaurant loves! Jeff and I just sit and wait. Jeff has his Ipad and I have my Kindle, so we are pretty content while waiting. Perhaps, the ability to wait for "x" or "y" comes with age, because I didn't always feel this way.
We are so not into this holiday, that we'll likely have lunch and then a small meal later in the day. Since it's just the two of us, preparing meals has become less important. And, since Jeff now works from home, I no longer have to think about each evening, what can be fixed, so that he has something for lunch the next day.
Well, my dears, have a wonderful Sunday, and remember never eat the ears first!
