Today is the day before Jeff flies to Texas for the COPA (Cirrus Owners' Pilots Association) migration. As I did last year, I will remain home. Four days of pilot stuff just isn't my cup of tea, and Jeff will have a much better time without me.
On Sunday, Jeff and one of the plane's new partners, washed and waxed the plane. Jeff says she looks good. No more student pilots, who frankly Scarlett couldn't give a damn about your plane. This is evidenced by the damage, most of which is minor, but damage nonetheless, to the plane.
This morning, Jeff and said partner, who will be going to Texas with him, are taking the plane out for a spin to make sure that the plane is performing at 100%. Jeff will leave very early tomorrow and I know he's anxious to get underway. He looks forward to the annual migration each year, and greeting old friends and making new ones.
The next thing that we need to buy for the plane is a golf cart or a tug to help pull the plane in and out of the hanger. She's a heavy girl and while it's doable without the aid of a tug, or equivalent, it's a lot of work. There is a golf cart that's for sale and if Jeff can work it out with his schedule, he'll probably buy one today.
My job for today is to make sure that Jeff's clothes are washed and folded. Jeff prefers to do his own packing, and I'm okay with that. As a woman, I don't think men tend to pack enough clothes - and men think women pack way too much!
By the way, Angelina Jolie flies a Cirrus! We're definitely in good company.

Labor Day
9/7/2015
While today is Labor Day, I doubt that too many people are laboring. Today will likely be spent in cars returning from the beach, the mountains, or wherever folks go to vacation. If your school hasn't already started, it will be tomorrow for sure.
Once school is back in session, the commuting traffic pattern will change. I'm sure that Jeff will notice the difference. When I worked, I definitely noticed the difference between August and September traffic. Since I don't work any longer, I don't pay much notice about traffic, it's definitely a bonus for being retired.
Jeff is flying on Wednesday to Texas for the annual migration of COPA (Cirrus Owners' Pilot Association). As I did last year, I have opted again to stay home. At COPA migrations, while there are spouse events, it's really more about pilots talking to pilots about planes.
So while Jeff is doing what he enjoys, I'll stay home and do what I enjoy. Here's what I won't be doing: I won't have to cook dinner, or do more than one load of laundry and maybe run the dishwasher once. I will set the Tivo to record a whole bunch of crummy television shows (the reality ones that I like so much), eat Frosted Flakes for dinner and maybe have popcorn for dessert!
The only thing that gets to me when Jeff isn't home, is noises in the dark. I tend to sleep with a light on downstairs as well as upstairs. I know that both dogs, who do sleep deeply, will become alert and make noise if they hear something.
While Jeff's away, Maggie will take over his side of the bed. Sam, will continue to sleep on top of my feet.
Since it's Labor Day, I better get started on doing some kind of work. Once my work is done, I can return to the book I'm reading, which I'm enjoying very much.

Happy Birthday Sam!
9/6/2015
We rescued Sam, a Westie, seven years ago. Today, he turns 15 and has mellowed into a really lovely dog. Sam's first 7 years were mostly spent in a crate and when we first took him in, there were times he was meaner than a junk yard dog. He snarled and snapped at everyone. We worked with him, because we didn't want to send him back to Westie Rescue.
Seven years later, Sam is the most vocal of the Westies we have owned. He "talks" and is super needy. When we're not home, I believe he still has some separation anxiety, but since I no longer work, he's seldom alone.
Sam is certainly slowing down. When he wants to jump on furniture, he sometimes misses and absolutely can't get up on our bed anymore. He has cataracts, so we have night lights to help him see in the dark. When we bought two new recliners, we kept the old and comfy sofa. We piled the sofa up with pillows and a blanket, and Sam seems quite happy to snooze away the hours.
Yesterday, there was a deer across the street from the house. Sam was outside but didn't even see it. Maggie, on the other hand, was in the house going nuts. Our neighbor's dog always barks when he's let out in the yard. For years, the dogs have responded to the barking, but Sam (maybe because he can't hear very well), no longer runs down the stairs to make his presence known.
Statistically speaking, Westies normally live 10 to 12 years. So, we have been blessed to have Sam living much longer as well as staying healthy.
Happy Birthday Sam! This isn't a picture of Sam, but it could be.

Shopping at Target
9/4/2015
Yesterday, Stacey (DIL) and Benjamin picked me up and we went to Target to shop. I have always enjoyed Target, they have a lot of really neat things to buy. I really didn't need anything, but I have some mentally unspoken thing in my head, that if you're in a store you should buy something! That isn't always a good message to have running around in your head.
Benjamin was very good in the store. He was patient and very well behaved. I have only known one other man who could and would endure shopping without complaint - my Dad. My Dad would take me to "town" for shopping and lunch. We would stroll around inside the stores and he didn't even mind when I would stop to try on hats. Remember when hats were a big thing in stores?
As I went through the store, I found a few things to put in my cart. Nothing major, nail polish, nail polish remover, and a rattan tiered basket for my office. I also bought two movies for Benjamin that were a steal at $5.00. These are movies he hasn't seen: Gremlins and ET. I think he will enjoy both of them. I know his father and Uncle Scott did.
Before going to the store, I had upped my "zaps" on my stimulator. I was able to walk through the store pretty well, but at the end of our shopping, I definitely needed more zaps when I got home. While we were in Target, Stacey and I had talked about going to Tuesday Morning, but gave up on that idea by the time we got back to the house.
It was very nice of Stacey to ask me out to "play". We had a good time and hopefully we'll be able to do things like that again soon.

Checkbooks
9/3/2015
I remember and perhaps you do too when you carried a checkbook in your purse? Back in the day we wrote checks out for groceries, hair cuts, prescriptions - you name it. When was the last time you had your checkbook in your purse?
Your answer is probably the same as mine - I honestly can't remember. But I do know that with the surge of credit card use, I use my cards for groceries, hair cuts, etc. In fact, pretty much everything.
Payment for bills are made using the computer and the printer. No handwritten checks anymore. We have become such a credit card society, that if you pay in cash, the cashier looks squinty-eyed at you.
Admittedly, if you are an Amazon shopper like I am, Amazon already knows the credit card I'm going to use. Handy for me, but also a bit scary to know that some mainframe server at Amazon knows how I'm going to pay for my purchases.
I don't even carry much money on me. If I'm out with Jeff, which is most of the time, he pays. He always has, from our first date in 1974, until now. Pretty much the only time I think about cash is when he's going to be out of town and I might want to get a hamburger or something. I am not an independent woman - I know that will shock some of you - but for those who know me well, it will be no surprise.
Today, I'm going shopping with Stacey and Benjamin. Will I have my checkbook with me? Nope, but I'll be sure to bring the plastic!

Fly-In to Hilton Head
9/2/2015
Jeff and I have signed up for a two day event in October in Hilton Head. Unlike the annual migration, which is starting next week in Texas, the October fly-in there will be less pilot meetings. That, of course, doesn't mean that all the pilots who do attend, won't be talking about planes, etc., anyway, just not in an organized manner.
We non-pilots are going to tour a plantation and there are two dinners planned. The hotel has a private beach as well as a pool. I am looking forward to the plantation tour, but I'd be just as happy sitting by the ocean.
I have already made arrangements for Sam (terrier) to be boarded and Scott has kindly agreed to keep Maggie at his house. So I can leave town and know that the dogs are being well cared for. Unfortunately, nobody wants to keep Sam - he's old and likes to make sure that all the ground around him has been adequately marked!
I haven't had anything to look forward to in a very long time, so I'm happy to have something on my calendar besides doctor and dentist appointments!
Maybe while I'm sitting on the beach, I can order some kind of drink that comes with a paper umbrella!

A Slow Tuesday
9/1/2015
Although I'm looking at my calendar, I still can't believe it's September already. If I were a child in school, this would be the week to begin protesting (at least in your mind).
When I worked, I always dreaded the return of the school year. Why? Simple, because you should or had to plan your escape from the neighborhood around the schedule of buses. Second, everybody who was on vacation, is back and traffic becomes a bear.
With school in session, I can return to shopping during the middle of the week, without running into a child intent on buying the best clothes, as well as picking out school supplies (some of which will likely never be used).
I noticed yesterday that the stores were already stocking the shelves with Halloween candy. I wouldn't want the temptation of having candy in the house for two months! I love sugar - cookies, cake, ice cream, candy and pretty much anything else that is sweet.
Jeff and I will celebrate our 41st wedding anniversary this month. When I think back to the somewhat strange way we met (my dad and his sister setting us up), I couldn't have in my wildest dreams thought about 41 years together. When you are in your 20's, you have trouble wrapping your mind around anything so far into the future.
While I worked for over 40 years, I find the mostly drama free zone of the house to my liking. There are no office games - who likes who - and who doesn't. That sort of thing. My days are my own and I can spend them anyway I want.
It would be very easy to be unproductive, but I try to have one chore, other than the normal stuff, that I do every day. Lately, I've arranged the chaos that is/was the pantry. A more organized pantry means something to me. Jeff, not so much.
It's early yet, so I haven't decided on today's special chore. Never fear, I'll think of something.
