Nothing, Absolutely Nothing

10/6/2017

Happy Friday!  And better yet, happy long weekend.  What to do with all that free time?  Oh I remember, I'm retired, so basically I always have free time.

After yesterday's fiasco with the dress, you would assume (but you'd be wrong) that I wouldn't try to hem anything again, but I am.  One piece of clothing that I was given is a lovely pastel multi-colored dress/robe.  I like it a lot, but it must have been worn by a woman at least six feet tall. Since there was stripes it was actually easy to cut a mostly straight line.  After the cutting, I grabbed my needle and thread to go to work.  The easiest thread to find is navy blue, but since I'm never going to wear it out of the house, I don't mind the dark stitches.  Not too picky about the color I use for hemming.  The very difficult part is getting the thread into the needle.  And, because my eyesight isn't very good, I'm using the biggest needle I can find, and still having trouble.  After I finish my blog, I will go back and try to finish the hemming.

I have had my ears pierced for probably next to 45 years.  Jeff has over time bought me diamond studs and emerald studs, and they are beautiful.  The right ear is causing me problems right now, and am only able to wear one of those beautiful studs in my left ear.  In my "professional" opinion, there is a very tiny something (think tiny pea), which makes it nearly impossible to push a stud through.  I've done some research, thank you Google, and found a local tattoo parlor that has very good reviews.  I would like to have my right ear pierced again, but perhaps a little bit higher.  But, I am by no means interested in getting a tattoo!  Or piercing in other areas of my body.

Jeff and one of the plane's co-partner are planning on flying on Sunday to the mid-west (I can't remember which city) and picking up our plane and flying home on Monday. weather permitting.  You really can't get a good grip on Mother Nature.  She does as she damn well pleases, and I'm pretty sure she's not concerned about the devastation she leaves behind.

I don't want to jinx anything, but the girls seem to be quieter and better behaved.  As cute as a young puppy is, it's a whole lot easier on your nerves as well as the floors, when they start exhibiting better behavior.  That said, I wouldn't let Bella loose in the kitchen.  Pretty sure she would still do a stretch and grab to get something from off the counter.

Nice chatting with all of you, but I'm determined to finish the hemming on the dress.  Wish me luck.

My New Favorite Day of the Week!

10/5/2017

Most people would say that Friday is their favorite day.  Makes sense given that it's the threshold for the weekend.  And, when I was working, that was definitely my favorite day.  But, now Wednesday has become my favorite day.  Why?  Simple really.  I have a lovely woman who comes in to clean the house.  She does such an amazing job, I feel like I should just sit and touch nothing!

I still find it awkward, but I'm working on it, to sit in my recliner and watch people scrub away on the house.  After the cleaning, I find myself looking at dresser tops and kitchen counters in a new light.  Do I really need that stack of books on my dresser?  Since they've been sitting there since the beginning of time, probably not.  Update: they have now been removed to a spare room, that I don't have cleaned.  Actually, you enter the two spare bedrooms at your own risk.  They make a most excellent dumping ground for everything and anything that you don't want to deal with at the moment, or ever!

We took the girls in yesterday for their rabies and distemper shots.  Bella weighs 63 pounds and the vet thinks she could afford to lose a little weight.  She doesn't look overweight to me, but scales don't lie, but I wish they did.

We stopped at WalMart on the way home so that Jeff could run in and get a few things.  When we got home, I started emptying a bag and found a pool of pink dish soap at the bottom.  Somebody at the factory, apparently didn't put the top on the bottle tightly, and during the trip home became loose.  There was very little soap in the bottle, but a huge amount in the bag and a trail of pink soap from the garage into the kitchen.  In trying to clean the floor, here's what I found - it's super difficult to wipe soap off the floor, because when you use a wet rag, it becomes soapy!  After checking on line, where you can get info on just about anything, and found that using vinegar will help get the soap off the floor.  Just happen to have a bottle of vinegar sitting around, so perhaps I'll try that today.

It's a pretty nice day outside, so I'll put on my Birkenstocks, which currently the only pair of shoes I can put on, take my rollator out to the street, and start sweeping the leaves into a pile.  The leaves are in the street, so a broom and dustpan, while very unique, absolutely do an excellent job.

When I was in high school, I won the "Betty Crocker Award" for beating out my fellow classmates on a written test.  These other girls really concentrated on selecting the right answer.  I only took the required homemaking class, so I was clueless for most of the questions.  Knowing this, I just started circling answers in a random fashion.  And in doing that, I won.  Now while I may have won that award, it is no secret that when it comes to sewing anything more than a button on, I'm clueless.  Case in point, I was given a patchwork and beaded dress from a friend, and I like the dress very much.  Trouble is it was too long and must have been worn by a woman six feet tall.  But getting the length under control was no problem for me.  I grabbed a pair of scissors and cut off about four inches.  And then it was time to sew my newly cut hem, which is where I ran into trouble.  I sat down with needle and thread and since I had (notice the word had) no intention of wearing the dress out in public, I didn't much care if the hem was a bit off here and there.  When I was finished, I was really proud of myself, until I noticed that what I had finally created was a patchwork pillowcase!  Apparently, while trying to sew the hem, I didn't notice that I was actually sewing both sides of the dress together.  I know this doesn't happen to many people, but screwing up a sewing project is old news for me.  Today, I have two options: (a) throw the dress away; or (b) tear out my raggedy stitches and try again.  I haven't decided which option I'll choose, but since I really do like the dress, might be bold enough to try again!  I'll let you know.

Time to check on the girls, they've been too quiet for too long and that generally is not a good thing!

Physical Therapy, Missed Ride and Other Things

10/4/2017

Yesterday, I had my first physical therapist appointment with a new doctor.  My time with him is for 45 minutes and it's just one on one.  When I left the rehab facility, they had a physical therapist come and see me several times a week.  After having my therapy yesterday, the therapy I received from the rehab center was kind of a joke.  Dr. Lee had me stretching my back, doing some balancing exercises and a yoga pose, but changed slightly for me.  I did the one leg bent at the knee and the other leg, stretched out behind me.  Bit challenging when I had to put most of my weight on my right leg, but at least I didn't fall over!

When therapy was done, I quickly (okay perhaps quickly isn't the right word) went downstairs to wait for my ride with Metro Access.  I was downstairs and outside at the appointed time.  Metro Acess gives you a window for pick-up and unfortunately that window is a bit long.  I sat on my rollator and did some puzzles, ate grapes, more puzzle pages, more glancing at my watch and still there I was perched like the Queen of England!  The window pick-up time came and went, but being the mother of patience (at least I think I am, others might disagree), I waited an additional 15 minutes, before I called asking about my ride.  My ride came at 1:15 and was waiting for me at the wrong entrance.  Lucky that I saw the van go by.  I started walking as fast as I could to get to the other side of the building to catch the van.  I was successful, but by the time I got home, I felt like I had been through the wringer.  If, and that's a big if, I could drive my car, then obviously that would be the preferred way to travel.  Come and go when I pleased, but that's not an option right now, unfortunately.

We're taking the girls to the vet this afternoon for their rabies shots.  That ought to make them happy campers on the way home.  As puppies they received a rabies shot good for one year.  Today, they'll be getting their big dog shots, good for three years.

The oak leaves were picked up this morning, so later I'll get out my broom and dustpan and sweep and pick up the newly fallen leaves.  I know using a broom and dustpan seems like an odd combination, but believe me it works.  Who needs a rake anyway?

Closing now.  Off to the shower and do some tidying, before the cleaning lady comes today!  I know, that I'm not alone in doing this.  I'm not talking about vacuuming and mopping, just some general straightening up here and there.

Have a good day.

Butter

10/3/2017

Growing up, "butter" (oleo actually) came in sticks, that were rock hard and tasted pretty much like nothing.  Then came the age of whipped butter in a tub.  What an improvement that was.  Because of it's round shape, a bit trickier to store in the refrigerator.  Oleo sticks stacked up neatly.

I can't remember a time when my parents ever had butter in the house.  They used, for many, many years Parkay margarine.  That's what I grew up with, and it's all I knew about the world of margarine.  When we would eat out, little pats of butter came with bread, and it was definitely yummy.

Once divorced, and on a super tight budget, I also bought margarine in a tub, to be used sparingly.  And then I met Jeff.  After meeting Jeff, and ultimately marrying him, there was never any margarine in the house.  Nope, it was butter all the time.  Theory is that because butter tastes so much better, you use less of it.  That theory doesn't actually work for me - I don't think you can have enough butter on your food.

And now we come to the two seasons of butter.  I bet you didn't know butter had seasons, but they do.  The first season is fall and winter .  You bring out your warm and toasted bagel, and "attempt" to put butter on top.  Attempt is the key word.  You slice, (actually hack) away bits and pieces of butter, in an attempt to get enough butter to get the job done.  One answer to this problem is to toast said bagel and put it in the microwave for a few seconds.  Out comes perfectly melted butter.

The other season is summer.  It's hot outside and so is your butter.  At this time of year, the butter is so soft and in actuality a bit hard to spread.  Why?  Because when butter turns into the melted stage, it's easier to spoon the butter on your bagel.  It's that soft.  I've been tempted in the past to just hold the butter dish over my bagel and let the butter drip onto that bagel.

Which season do I prefer?  Summer hands down.  I hate cold butter and the effort (really?) you have to put into getting enough butter, i.e., calories, on your bagel or toast!

Little known fact:  National Butter Day is May 1st, which coincidentally is Scott's birthday.  Of course, you can and should celebrate that awesome "holiday" by using butter every day!

A Movie and Ice Cream!

10/2/2017

Yesterday, my book club decided that in addition to reading the book of the month (Glass Castle), we would go and see it in the theater.  Glass Castle is a true story and at times I found it very hard to watch.  Alcoholic Father and perhaps at times, a Mother who was at the very least, out of touch with reality, as her artwork seemed more important to her than raising her children.

The family moved around a lot, trying successfully to avoid paying bills.  Sometimes the children's bed was a blanket thrown on a desert floor, other times a bed with a board for a mattress.  And yet, even through years of hunger and absent good parenting, the children grew up and one by one, left the nest.

The author was one of the daughters, while another daughter becomes an illustrator and the son a police officer. It made me sad to watch as their parents could obviously afford whiskey, and oil paints, but not the basic necessities of life - a roof over their heads, water, electricity and food.

Truth be told, there are probably hundreds of thousands if not millions of children across the globe who go to bed hungry every day.  And yet, as a society, rather than try to feed the hungry children in our cities, instead concentrate our power and actions to foreign countries.  I think this is sad.

I am thankful that my children were never hungry. And, I don't believe that I have ever known a child who had little or no food in their house.  If I had known, or will know, of such a child, then I will happily feed that child.

After the movie, we went out for ice cream, a favorite of mine.  Dinner was the leftover steak and potatoes from Saturday night.  I am going to eat my Tres Leches cake tonight after dinner.  Something really enjoyable to look forward to.

Have a wonderful Monday.  Okay, okay, have a Monday.  For some workers, the weekend coming up is a three dayer (I know that's not a word, but you get the idea).  I think Jeff and one one of the co-owners of the plane, are flying up next weekend to pick up the plane and bring her home.

I have to run, the house awaits!

Yummy Dinner!

10/1/2017

Last night, Jeff and I went to Scott's house for a steak dinner.  All of the food was fabulous.  Scott cooked steaks, and he did a really good job grilling them to perfection.  I love steak.  It's the kind of food that you simply want to eat with your eyes closed, it's just that good.

Wendy made for me a Tres leches cake and it was amazing.  That particular cake is one of my favorite desserts, and I was so happy to have my cake and eat it to!  Wendy sent home with me some cake, so I can enjoy it again today.  Yum.  I know you're not supposed to eat cake for breakfast, but let me tell you I was really tempted.  I have no idea where I get my will power (just kidding about that) to resist some sugary cake in the refrigerator.  Oh, it's going to be wonderful tonight, while I'm watching cheesy tv shows!

I made my easy hash brown casserole, which is a food "go to" food to take to a dinner.  Super easy, very few ingredients, one bowl and a spoon needed.  I'm sure I can make a complicated dish, but I try and stay with the family favorites.  There are certain dishes that the boys have grown up with, and they're favorites for them.

This afternoon, I'm off to the movies and later ice cream.  What a great weekend I'm having.  Cake last night and ice cream today.  Who could ask for more?  Oh, and bonus - all my laundry is done!  Woo Hoo.  So, after my outing, I can lean back in my recliner, pick out my shows to watch this week and eat cake!  Now that I have the cooking channel, I am recording pretty much any show that has the word cake, sugar or cupcake in the title!  And there's a lot of them - yeah.

Have to bring this to a close.  My ride is here.  Have a great Sunday.

Donating - Or Just Getting Rid of Stuff!

9/30/2017

I had received some used clothes, some of which had to meet my first and foremost criteria - it had to fit.  Once that first challenge was met, then further scrutiny was needed.  Was the particular piece of clothing something I would actually wear - like ever?  Two bags of clothing later, all being donated to Purple Heart, tells you that most of these clothes didn't meet my standards, which are pretty low!

After bagging up the clothes for pick-up on Monday, I decided to get rid of a lot of my books.  Even with reading glasses, many of the books I own, I can no longer read, the print is too small.  I'm hanging onto them as if they were life preservers.  This growing old thing really sucks.  And, from time to time, a new challenge/obstacle gets in the way.  I love to read, and while I really enjoy my Kindle, it's just not the same as actually holding a book.  But finding large print books are hard to come by, even in a library.

Today, I'm going to put my emotions aside and send the books off to somebody else, who I hope, will enjoy them.  It kills me that even my word search puzzle books, which I love, are now in large print.  I have a cataract in one eye, but apparently isn't big enough to warrant surgery.  People tell me that once the cataract is removed, and an artificial lens is inserted in place of the damaged lens (or something like that).  I've also been told that people have much better vision after having this surgery.

I should think about giving away books is a kind of purging.  Less is more, at least that's what people say.  And, when you look around my house, it's readily apparent that I haven't gotten on the less is more philosophy!

Fixing a potato dish to take to Scott's house this evening and I think I'll make pumpkin bread too.  Jeff has gone out, with the girls, to Andy's house for part of the day.  The girls will come home exhausted from part of a day running and playing.

Happy Saturday.
