Mother's Day is behind us. If you could go to the store (and you know you can't), all merchandise having to do with Mothers, would be on sale. Or being packed up for next year, at least the non-perishable items. Flowers, for instance would not be good if stuck in a box for a year.
The Scott et al and Andrew et al, were on Zoom together. It was wonderful to see everybody all together. I know that Zoom has become a thing, but this old gal hasn't a clue how to use it. But, I'm confident that Jeff can walk me through the steps. The problem will be my ability to remember what he tells me. I know what you're thinking - write it down. I have done that in the past, but then forget where the paper is!
Having the ability to see all of the family, was wonderful. I just wish I could send some kind of virtual hug to all of them.
Our day was quiet, and we had pizza for dinner. Jeff and I aren't too much in a rut, but Sunday's dinner is pizza. The girls hang around waiting for "pizza butts" (crust). This pretty much happens when I eat toast, and they wait around our chairs, waiting for tidbits!
Their little faces are cute, tails are wagging and then the moment they've been waiting for arrives - eating the bits and pieces of whatever we're eating. If we're eating at the table, which is rare, they hang around, waiting!
I have three important tasks to do today. Shredding. For most people, they wouldn't be a big deal. But, in my case, we're talking about two boxes. I actually don't mind the shredding, it's emptying the shredded paper ultimately into a brown recycle bag, which I staple shut. Gone are the days when you just tossed all bills, advertisements, etc., into the trash can. We now live in a world where identity theft is a real thing.
Second chore on my to-do list, is put away the laundry (boring). At least, I've folded everything.
Third thing, is to wrap up the "goodies" for my sister box. Since I really can't go to the store, and unlike everybody else around me, I'm not creative. So what's left? Shopping for my sister box with things in the house (and Jeff I'm not picking out any of your things) that I believe my sister will like. When it's my turn again, I'm hoping that I can go to the store, and pick out treasures from a store! I think most of us still remember stores. I would even enjoy walking around a mall. Wouldn't be as much fun as usual, because a lot of the stores are closed, but you would be able to get your exercise in!
Fourth - a fun project. I own one of those diamond facet art kit. My picture is of a butterfly, and it should be lovely when it's finished. I used to enjoy the paint by number kits, but I know I'm too shaky now. I would have paint everywhere. With the diamond art kit, there is a tool, the likes of which I can't find. When I purchased this kit, Bella was in her destructive puppy years. She "killed" my cellphone, took this diamond kit out to the yard and destroyed the box. And, somewhere out in the yard, is the tool that I have to have to start this project.
I hope all of the mothers out there, were feted by their families.
Stay safe.

Animals for Sale on Craigslist
5/8/2020
I'm not really in the market for another dog, but I check out the dogs on Craigslist from time to time. While I love "the girls", there is a part of me, that would like to have a small or tiny dog. I think they're called purse dogs, because they can easily fit into a large bag. Daisy, who was supposed to be a "smaller" dog, weighs in around 40+ pounds. Way too heavy for me to pick up, much less carry around!
What I've seen when looking at dogs on Craigslist, is the excuses. Excuses, such as: we didn't know the puppy would grow into such a big dog (dogs such as a Cane Corso, for example, who can weigh in from 90 to 120 pounds).
I adopted this dog, but my apartment manager won't let me keep him/her. You know full well, that the person adopting a dog, already knows that the apartment manager doesn't allow dogs. My thought is - why did you take a dog anyway? I'm not a dog, but if I were, I think I would find it unsettling to go from one owner to another.
I'm at work all day, and have no time for the dog, who stays in a crate during the day. Again, you knew going in, that you worked all day. And, again I ask you what was the rationale of getting a dog in the first place.
I'm moving, I'm sick, my children are allergic to dogs, the excuses go on and on.There is a neighbor, who ties up his little dog, and leaves the dog in the front yard. I'm sure that the dog doesn't stay out in the yard for very long, but still.
One of the first things we did when we moved into this house, was to have a fence built. We wanted to be good dog owners, and not let them wander around. When Daisy was a puppy, she could and did jump into the neighbor's yard. Fast forward to today, and Daisy is big and/or heavy enough that she can no longer jump a fence.
I just did some quick math. The medium life span of a regular sized dog is about 11 years. Jeff and I are both 70, which means we would be approximately 81 years old. After checking out these numbers, it is possible that Daisy and Bella could be the last dogs we own.
Jeff always tried to get his Grandfather to get a dog. His Grandfather's excuse was that he'd love a dog, but, he couldn't bear the thought of the dog dying. After hearing that, Jeff stopped urging his Grandfather to own a dog. When he went to the desert, and I can't remember whether he had a little home there or not, he would take Jeff's parents little dog for company.
Both of the girls are special in their own way. Bella, the hound that I use as a service dog, always seems to know when I'm suffering. Once I start crying, Bella comes to me and puts her front paws on my legs, then I can lean over and give her a very long hug. I'm not sure how dogs know when to help their owner. But, giving Bella a long hug, which she tolerates, begins to calm me down. It's wonderful to own such a great dog, that we picked out from a rescue organization.
Supposed to rain most of the day. Rain is good for all things green outside, but not so much for we little humans.

Stay safe everyone.

A Bit of This and a Bit of That
5/7/2020
The weather appears to be changing again. I have on my "shorty" pants, but feel like I need to change and put on pants. There is also a very slim chance that the white stuff might come this weekend. What ever is the matter with Mother Nature? I guess she's just fickle.
We are, as well as you probably are, have to wear a mask when you leave your house. Blah. I know the importance, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
The paper ran an article about masks. No, not those blue disposal ones, but fancy masks. Designer masks, if you will. Eventually, designers, as well as handy folk, (me not being either of those) started making masks. Beautiful ones. And, the prices rise accordingly. Research shows that you can buy a mask on Ebay for $200.00 (I checked, of course I did), and couldn't find any mask that was selling for that price. Or an N95 mask for !99.95, which normally sells for $15.00. There is a company selling designer masks for a mere $1,025! That's a lot of money for a mask. Granted, we're probably going to have to wear masks for the near future.
Interesting note:
The CDC recommends using an N95 or higher level respirator mask to prevent the spread of coronavirus, but, again, this recommendation is currently only for health professionals. On Saturday, the U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams put it bluntly on Twitter: "Seriously people — STOP BUYING MASKS!" This statement is contrary to what we've all been told to do. For now, and hopefully not forever, I'm going to wear a mask when I'm outside.
Amazon was selling those blue disposal masks, but now all of those masks are unavailable. Shocker.
Masks, such as this one above, were made for celebrities, such as Jennifer Lopez.
So people, while I don't like them, we've got to don our masks when we leave the house.
Stay safe.

New Dog?
5/6/2020
I've been looking on Craigslist for a tiny dog. What I think I would like to have is a dog that I would be able to carry. I originally thought, when we rescued Daisy, that she would be a smaller dog. Based on Bella's weight and size, she is "small". But weighs more than I can lift. I guess a dog that could be considered a "purse" dog. I know there is another name for little dogs, such as: a Yorkie, Chihuahua, and dogs like that. I guess what I really want, is a little lap dog to love.
Today, I'm having my first video conference. I have a doctor's appointment today, and we're going to do it via Zoom. Mind you, I know absolutely nothing about Zoom, but Jeff will get me all set up. If you have a video appointment, then you can see the doctor's face, and as they say, a picture is worth more than words.
Let's talk about Mother Nature for a minute. Yesterday, was a pretty nice day outside, with a gentle wind. Of course, the weather changed later in the day. This morning is bleak and more on the cold side. Yesterday, "shorty" pants - today long pants. Back here, I'm never sure what clothes to put on! I know that's not a big deal, but a bit frustrating.
I did massive shredding yesterday, which is a good thing. What is not a good thing, is the amount of shredded paper on the floor. I try very hard to empty the shredder into a plastic bag, but sometimes I miss, like I did yesterday. Then the county wants shredded material to be put in a lawn bag. Okay, so I moved the paper from the plastic bag to a lawn bag. This caused more shred to land on the floor. Once you have filled up a paper bag with hopefully most of the shredded paper, then you fold over the top and staple in shut. I understand why we do this, but frankly, it's a pain the but. Most families, probably have only a little bit of shredding. For us, the papers go way back, and have all kinds of identification on them. No longer, thanks to identify theft, can you afford to toss your mail in the trash.
When I worked for the CEO, who was paranoid, he would give me documents with an "x" written on the top. This meant, said documents were to go to the shredder. Jeff and I have continued using an "x" for paper that we don't have to save.
For too many years, I had a folder labeled for pretty much everything. A folder for cars, whether we still owned the car or not, medical bills, utility bills - well you get the idea. I guess I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, because I genuinely thought that we needed to keep paid bills.
I eventually stopped putting paid bills into those nicely labeled folders. Instead, I shoved them into a shoe box. While dealing with these kinds of documents, it finally occurred to me, that if a company hasn't hounded us for being late on a payment, and this never happens, why keep all these papers.
Yesterday, Jeff brought down a box that needs to be shredded. And, there is a MESS on the floor. Ada comes today, so she'll have the "fun" job of vacuuming the floor. Late yesterday, Jeff brought down two more boxes for me to deal with. By doing all of this, will make his "office" a "tad" bit more organized. And, that's a good thing. Of course, by doing this, now makes my office truly a mess! I guess you can't really win.
Stay safe.

Nice Day and Virus
5/5/2020
Yesterday, Jeff and I had our first phone call visit with my psychiatrist. It was a bit odd, but perhaps could be the way of the future. I hope not.
Later this week, I am going to have a video chat with another doctor who is now part of my "team"! If, you had told me years ago, that I would actually have many doctors caring for me, I wouldn't have believed you.
I had my early morning dose of CNN news. You get to see both the number of cases as well as the number of deaths. Both numbers are sobering. In the past week or so, Maryland has had 200 new cases and 35 deaths. You can't help but wonder, when (or if) this nasty virus will go away. I'm okay with social distancing. If, you seldom leave your house, then your risk of catching the virus is small. At least that's what I think.
I'm going to get a box and will make it a "virus" box. In the box, the thermometer, masks, gloves, etc. If, I could pick up some kind of joy, I'd put that in my box too! As a child, I was a girl scout, and being prepared was hammered into us. Now, as an adult, I view life in much the same way. Why wait until disaster strikes, to buy necessary, and mostly unavailable, items - thermometer, disinfecting wipes, etc.
I'll put all of these things in a box that I'll label VIRUS. It won't take up much space, and once (fingers crossed) the virus is over, the box can be sealed up and put in the basement. I really had to struggle to find a no contact thermometer, as well as masks. I did find on Etsy, a piece of crochet with two buttons on each side. To use, you put the elastic under your ears, and attach them to the buttons, which is on your neck. They look like this:

And. you can find many people who make these ear savers. And, of course there is always Amazon, who have these ear savers available to buy. You know that I'm all about comfort!
In my spare time, of which I have lots, I am preparing my "sister" box to send to Marilee. Since I don't go out to shop, the things I'm going to send her, are things from the house. And, I hope she likes them. The last time, if my memory is correct, we last saw each other 23 years ago, at Mom's funeral.
Jeff has a large box of documents that need shredding. I like to do my shredding the day before Ada comes. Why? Because when I dump the shredder's contents into a bag, sometimes (actually, all the time) pieces of paper manage to escape the bag. I suppose you could just put your shredded documents in the recycle bin, but then you stand the chance of bits of paper in the street. And, nobody wants that.
The shredding has to go into a yard recyclable bag. Then, I transfer the contents of the plastic bag, into the appropriate yard bag, staple up the ends, and then throw that bag into the recycle bin. This is serious business. Perhaps, you remember a time when the mail arrived, and you simply put your bills, documents of all sorts, into a trash can. Obviously, this was a long time ago.
Wherever you are, stay safe, wear your masks, and do the social distancing thing.

ramblings!
5/4/2020
When I write "Ramblings", what that actually means is I have no earthly idea what exactly I should blog about. This is also known as writer's block, a condition that most writers suffer from time to time.
Weather wise, you couldn't ask for a better day. Nice breeze, warmer temperature and lots of sun. Definitely a day to be outside. But, obligations come first - blogging, as well as my usual chores. Those "usual" chores, as you know by now, are boring, and truthfully, don't actually want to take them on. If you keep the doors closed on spare bedrooms, then the need for tidy organization doesn't really matter! The only company we have, is Benjamin, and he doesn't give a hoot about our spare bedroom. And, that's a good thing truly.
At the moment, I am gathering up things for (a) donations; and (b) the making of my "sister box". I may have explained this before, and while it does take a bit of time, it's a wonderful thing when you are on the receiving end. Reminds me of Christmas, and you're the only one getting presents. It's a really good thing. Since I don't get out on my own, and likely will never be able to do so, I went "shopping in the house" and was able to find many beautiful (at least I think so) gifts for my sister.
Each morning, while having breakfast, I watch CNN, until I think my head is going to explode. The numbers of cases are climbing, and unfortunately so are the number of deaths.
You would think that by being a recluse, staying home wouldn't matter much. I guess my answer is that before the quarantine, I could go places, like Target with Stacey. I could hug all of my family, all of whom I miss terribly.
I don't want to go to WalMart with Jeff. Because I get out of the house seldom, I like to browse a bit. Jeff says that once in a store, we're not there to shop, we're there to buy. And, I want to do the exact opposite. You know, browse through the garden center, to look at all the beautiful flowers. Since we have a large hole in the front yard, where the large tree was removed, we cannot plant anything in that spot. I think I'll gather up any fake flowers I can find in the house, and "plant" them there. Or, I can put seashells (I have many from years at the beach) on the big dead space. It has to remain empty for many years, and I understand that, but that doesn't mean it has to remain "un-decorated"!
Closing, and I hope it's sunny and bright wherever you are. Please stay safe, Jeff and I are staying in place pretty much all the time (99%), but we still need to get out for grocery store. Basically, you can eat (bad option), watch crappy television (and I'm bored with doing that), nap (and the girls enjoy a brief snooze) or take on a project!
